Adobe Creative Cloud Users Prefer Open-Source Alternatives

According to Inc. Magazine, creative professionals find the subscription fees for Adobe Creative Cloud to be a greater annoyance than artificial intelligence (AI). This criticism is highlighted by the new ArtCraft project, which offers free, open-source alternatives to Adobe's popular software.

The ArtCraft project has developed seven applications designed to mimic the appearance and functionality of Adobe's software, including Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, and Premiere Pro. The developers used Anthropic's Claude AI model to assist in recreating the applications but emphasize that they are built using Rust. These new tools, such as PhotoCraft and LightCraft, are free and open-source.

The publication suggests that Adobe's subscription model, costing around $60 per month, is causing dissatisfaction because many users do not feel they are receiving sufficient value for their money. This contrasts with earlier times when software could be purchased with a one-time payment. The current model makes customers feel like mere revenue sources.

Projects like ArtCraft demonstrate a demand for more affordable and flexible solutions in the creative industry. While AI development also raises concerns among creative professionals regarding training data origins and quality issues, the most significant pain point appears to be the software's pricing model.
