Adobe to transition Photoshop filters to non-destructive layer-based system

Adobe is redesigning its Photoshop filter architecture to allow users to adjust effects dynamically rather than applying them permanently to image pixels.

21 October 2026

Adobe is moving away from its traditional filter workflow, which currently applies effects directly to image pixels, effectively 'baking' them into the file. The new design shifts filters into an independent, layer-based system, enabling users to move, edit, or delete effects at any point in the editing process.

In the upcoming update, filter parameters will be managed through an properties panel, allowing for real-time adjustments to intensity, positioning, and scope without the need for destructive layer manipulation or masks. This change is intended to streamline professional post-production workflows where repetitive testing and granular control are required.

Adobe is also integrating AI capabilities that allow users to generate custom filters with adjustable controls, such as lens flares or weather effects. The rollout of these architectural changes is scheduled to begin later this year.
