Morteza Samadi, 23, a former reporter and photojournalist from Afghanistan, has begun a new life in Germany with support from Johanniter Accident Relief after fleeing persecution by the Taliban. Samadi reported on women's protests in Herat, which led to his arrest and alleged torture, including waterboarding and prolonged confinement without food.
After his release, Samadi went into hiding and received assistance from organizations such as Reporters Without Borders and Journalists for Human Rights to escape Afghanistan with his family. They spent a year in Islamabad, Pakistan, while their asylum applications were processed.
The family arrived in Germany in August 2022 and are currently housed in facilities provided by Johanniter in Einsiedel. Samadi expressed relief at being safe but misses his homeland and profession, stating his desire to restart his life in Germany.
Samadi is now focused on learning German and aims to find work as a journalist and photographer. His story highlights the challenges faced by journalists in repressive environments and the role of humanitarian organizations in providing refuge.
