Afreximbank to Fund $1.4 Billion Fertilizer Plant in Angola

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has announced a $1.4 billion financing facility for the development of a fertilizer plant in Soyo, Angola. Afreximbank will serve as the lead arranger and financial advisor for the project.

The initiative is spearheaded by Ammonia and Urea Fertilizer (AMUFERT) and supported by Angolan conglomerate OPAIA Group and state-owned Sonangol P&P Natural Gas (Sonagas). The African Energy Chamber (AEC) has backed the project, highlighting its role in advancing Africa's energy security and agricultural self-sufficiency.

Angola currently imports fertilizers valued at over $120 million annually. The AMUFERT plant, projected to begin production in early 2027, aims to produce 3,870 tonnes of fertilizer daily, which is expected to significantly curb import needs and bolster the nation's food security.

This development is anticipated to create jobs, introduce technological advancements, and diversify Angola's economy. The project is crucial for Angola as it seeks to decrease its reliance on imported fertilizers, thereby supporting local agriculture and ensuring farmers have consistent access to high-quality products.
