African Nations Prepare for Rollout of New TB Vaccines

Health officials from Kenya, Malawi, and Zambia convened with over 80 tuberculosis vaccine stakeholders in Nairobi, Kenya, from June 3-5. The workshop, hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO), aimed to prepare these nations for the potential rollout of novel TB vaccines.

The three countries are among global leaders in readiness for new TB vaccines, which could significantly alter efforts against the infectious disease. A vaccine is potentially licenseable as early as 2029, contingent on clinical trial outcomes. WHO estimates that a 50% effective vaccine could prevent up to 76 million new TB cases and 8.5 million deaths over 25 years.

"Tuberculosis remains a significant challenge in Africa, causing approximately 2.5 million people falling ill and over 400,000 deaths each year," stated Dr. Neema Rusibamayila Kimambo, WHO Representative for Kenya, a.i. "Kenya is proud to participate in late-stage clinical trials for new TB vaccines for adults and adolescents and will be one of the first countries to implement in the region."

The workshop featured updates on advanced TB vaccine trials and facilitated discussions on priority populations, delivery strategies, and the evidence needed for country adoption. Lessons learned from introducing vaccines for COVID-19 and malaria were shared to inform planning. The meeting identified priority actions to strengthen country preparedness and develop tailored implementation roadmaps.
