Agilent 8697 Headspace Sampler Launched with Integrated Intelligence
Agilent Technologies introduced the 8697 Headspace Sampler, featuring integrated gas chromatography communication. This launch expands the company's line of intelligent GC systems.

Agilent Technologies announced on March 15, 2021, the introduction of the Agilent 8697 Headspace Sampler, which the company states is the first headspace sampler with integrated gas chromatography (GC) communication. This new product builds on Agilent's strategy to develop intelligent GC systems, which began with the Intuvo 9000 GC System in 2016 and continued with the 8890 and 8860 GC Systems in 2019.
The new 8697 sampler incorporates advanced hardware features, including a microchannel-based electronic pneumatic control (EPC) module with atmospheric pressure compensation and valve-based sampling. According to Agilent, these features offer enhanced precision and performance, along with improved troubleshooting capabilities. The device's integrated connectivity to the GC system is designed to simplify data management for users.
The sampler's design addresses customer needs, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector, for remote access and system intelligence. The unit allows for the exchange of sample racks while the instrument is operating, enabling faster addition of samples during an ongoing analysis sequence. Alternate carrier gases can be utilized due to an isolated carrier flow path, and sample vials are safely vented.
Agilent emphasizes that the entire headspace-GC system can be managed via the GC instrument's touchscreen, facilitating easy communication across the network. The company continues to invest in the development of connected and intelligent instruments, extending its solutions beyond GC platforms. Agilent Technologies is a global player in the life sciences, diagnostics, and applied chemical markets.
