Agilent Technologies has introduced its Automated Media Exchange (AMX) module for the Agilent BioTek MultiFlo FX multimode dispenser, a system used for microplate-based assays in life science research.

The new module addresses the challenges of performing media exchanges in 3D cell cultures, such as spheroids and tumoroids. These models better mimic in vivo environments, but researchers have faced difficulties in exchanging media without disturbing or removing delicate cell structures. The AMX module utilizes two peristaltic pumps to gently aspirate and dispense media from microplate wells.

Controlled by specialized software, the pumps operate at slow, controlled speeds to avoid disturbing the cells. The positioning of the dispense and aspiration tubes is also adjustable in three dimensions (x-y-z) to prevent physical contact with the cell structures. This capability is crucial for long-term experiments that require multiple media changes.

The AMX module can be added to existing MultiFlo FX instruments and is interchangeable with other modules, offering workflow versatility. The technology aims to protect cell viability and encourage proliferation, particularly in spheroid and tumoroid cultures, while automating a critical laboratory procedure.
