Agilent Technologies announced a significant investment of approximately $725 million to double its manufacturing capacity for therapeutic nucleic acids. This expansion is a direct response to rapid market growth and a strong demand for the company's high-quality active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).

Therapeutic nucleic acids, also known as therapeutic oligonucleotides, serve as the API for drugs targeting a range of diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular conditions, and rare and infectious diseases. Agilent expects the new manufacturing lines, designated Train C and D, to commence customer shipments in 2026.

The market for therapeutic oligos, currently valued at around $1 billion, is projected to experience double-digit annual growth over the next five years, reaching an estimated $2.4 billion by 2027. The expansion at the Frederick, Colorado facility, which also houses a Train B line expected to go live soon, will enable Agilent to meet increasing demand for siRNA, antisense, and CRISPR-guide RNA molecules.

The expanded facility will adhere to current good manufacturing practices (cGMP) and incorporate advanced automation and engineering enhancements, including reduced water consumption and solvent recovery systems. The investment aims to support both existing and new biopharma customers in developing and globally commercializing their oligonucleotide-based therapeutics.
