Agilent Launches S540MD Slide Scanner for Digital Pathology
Agilent Technologies has launched the Agilent S540MD Slide Scanner System for digital pathology in key European markets. The system aims to accelerate pathology laboratory diagnostics.

Agilent Technologies has introduced the Agilent S540MD Slide Scanner System, a whole slide imaging (WSI) digital scanner, for sale in key European markets. This launch signifies Agilent's ongoing investment in digital pathology, expanding its portfolio to meet the increasing demand for high-throughput solutions in clinical laboratories.
Pathology laboratories worldwide face mounting pressure to enhance diagnostic precision and operational efficiency while managing growing sample volumes and complex cases. Robust, high-speed scanning solutions that integrate seamlessly into existing workflows are therefore essential. Reliance solely on traditional glass slide workflows can slow turnaround times and overall output, whereas workflow digitization and AI-driven tools have proven vital for efficiency and scalability.
Engineered for speed and scalability, the Agilent S540MD can process up to 540 slides, featuring continuous loading and compatibility with standard racks. The scanner incorporates automated scanning modes and AI-assisted tissue detection, enabling high-volume pathology labs to efficiently digitize glass slides and implement digital and AI-driven workflows. This new scanner is an Agilent-branded version of the Hamamatsu NanoZoomer S540MD Slide Scanner System.
The introduction of the Agilent S540MD scanner strengthens Agilent's digital pathology capabilities, enriching its offering from staining to AI decision support. It provides laboratories with greater flexibility to select solutions tailored to their specific requirements, aiming to streamline diagnostic processes and improve operational efficiency through the leverage of AI-powered insights. Initially, the Agilent S540MD scanner will be available as an in vitro diagnostic (IVD) device in Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, Austria, Luxembourg, and Italy, as well as the UK and Switzerland, with plans for expansion into additional European countries throughout 2026.
