SANTA CLARA, Calif. – July 6, 2017 – Agilent Technologies announced today its acquisition of Cobalt Light Systems, a U.K.-based provider of Raman spectroscopic instruments. The move is expected to enhance Agilent's presence in the rapidly expanding spectroscopy market, particularly for its pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical customers.

Cobalt Light Systems' technology enables the identification of chemicals and materials through opaque barriers, a capability that surpasses traditional spectroscopic methods limited to surface analysis. This allows for the analysis of entire tablets or substances within sealed containers without requiring sample preparation or opening containers. Such advancements offer significant time, cost, and resource savings in pharmaceutical quality control, hazardous material identification, and security screening.

The company's client base includes over 20 of the top 25 global pharmaceutical firms and more than 75 airports across Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Cobalt's portable devices have also been deployed at airport checkpoints, with over 500 units in operation. The company has recently entered the hazardous substances market with its handheld platform.

"Raman spectroscopy is one of the fastest-growing segments in spectroscopy," said Phil Binns, vice president and general manager of Agilent's Spectroscopy and Vacuum Solutions Division. "This acquisition gives our customers access to state-of-the-art Raman spectroscopy technology and provides Agilent immediate entry into this fast-growing segment with a highly competitive, differentiated offering."

Agilent acquired Cobalt Light Systems for £40 million in cash. Cobalt has 52 employees, and its CEO will remain with Agilent as the Director of Raman Spectroscopy.
