Agility's new humanoid robot can avoid humans

Agility Robotics has introduced its new Digit 5 humanoid robot, designed to work alongside humans without the need for physical safety barriers. This development could expand the use of robots in warehouses and automotive factories where human-robot collaboration is crucial.

The Digit 5 robot is equipped to detect and react to human presence autonomously. When it senses a person approaching, the robot can stop or move aside to allow safe passage. In close-proximity situations, the robot is capable of squatting or assuming a seated position to mitigate collision risks.

Pras Velagapudi, Agility's chief technology officer, explained the system's capabilities. "The robot was designed with a complex safe motion system that can take a variety of different mitigations depending on exactly what sort of human presence is detected," he stated.

This technology aims to facilitate smoother human-robot interaction in industrial settings, potentially increasing efficiency and safety in the workplace by reducing the requirement for isolated robot work cells.
