Agriculture Can Stabilize Electricity Grids

Agriculture may play a crucial role in stabilizing Germany's electricity grid in the future. A collaborative project by Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences and Technische Universität Braunschweig is examining how farm energy systems can be integrated into grid management. The goal is to more effectively utilize renewable energy produced on farms and protect against power outages.

The project analyzes energy flows on agricultural holdings, including renewable sources like solar and biogas plants, as well as energy consumers such as milking robots. A key focus is balancing the intermittent generation of renewable energy with the farms' own consumption patterns. The research aims to identify technical solutions that ensure continued farm operations during grid disruptions.

The German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) is supporting this initiative through its "Speicher und Netze" (Storage and Grids) funding program. In partnership with two dairy farms and the AgroTech Valley Forum, the project seeks to model realistic operating conditions and ensure the practical applicability of its findings. This research could significantly enhance the integration of renewable energy and grid reliability in rural areas.
