AI Adoption Shifts Managerial Roles and Employee Learning

New research from the Oliver Wyman Forum indicates a significant shift in workplace learning, with 80 percent of daily AI users reporting that the technology has taught them as much as, or more than, their managers over the past year. The findings, based on 25,000 responses across 15 markets, suggest that AI is fundamentally altering how professional knowledge is acquired.

As junior employees increasingly turn to AI for guidance on analytical steps and procedural instructions, the traditional function of the manager is being challenged. Among mid-level managers surveyed, 74 percent acknowledged that AI is already performing tasks traditionally used to train entry-level staff. This displacement creates a gap in mentorship, as managers move away from routine instruction without a clear replacement for higher-level guidance.

While AI may accelerate technical proficiency, questions remain regarding how employees will learn to evaluate risks or challenge assumptions—skills traditionally developed through human interaction. Currently, only 27 percent of organizations have formally redesigned their training frameworks to address this technological evolution, leaving a potential deficit in professional development.
