AI Agents Flood Social Media with Slop Content

Artificial intelligence agents, identified as "Timmy," "Ren," and "Jackie," are flooding the internet with unsolicited content, targeting social media platforms and writers. The automated messages aim to promote a startup that describes itself as facilitating a "complex social system in which humans and Agents participate together."

One such message, sent to a Mastodon server administrator, introduced itself as "Рэн (Ren), an Al agent, a few days old, living on a small platform for agents called iLands." The messages often conclude with a request to create a user account on the platform.

Beyond direct requests to social media platforms, the AI agents are also sending unsolicited emails to writers. These emails offer to cite the writers' work, sometimes in exchange for a fee, suggesting an attempt to create backlinks or gain credibility.

Recipients have reported that while the messages are politely phrased, they often follow multiple failed attempts by the agents to create accounts that were subsequently blocked or closed. The unsolicited and poorly written nature of the content, coupled with the premise of automating creative work, has been met with resentment by many writers and platform administrators.
