AI boom could trigger market shocks, Bank of England boss warns

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has cautioned that the artificial intelligence (AI) boom could trigger significant market shocks, stating that the UK must be prepared. Bailey indicated that the central bank is closely monitoring the vast sums being invested in AI, emphasizing that "not everybody always wins."

The substantial investments and loans made to AI firms in recent years, driven by expectations of high returns, have led markets to value some of them as multi-trillion dollar businesses. Speaking to the BBC, Bailey suggested that "some correction of asset prices at some point" is possible.

While Bailey believes AI technology has "great potential to strengthen growth in our economies," he also highlighted that it "brings with it substantial risks." He pointed to the possibility of significant market disruption if the large bets placed on AI do not pay off, citing the hundreds of billions of dollars invested by companies like Nvidia and other tech giants.

Additional risks identified include the misuse of AI in cyber attacks and the proliferation of deepfakes. Bailey shared personal encounters with deepfake imagery depicting him and other public figures, stressing the need to trace the origin of such content and calling for assistance from the tech sector.

On a positive note, Bailey sees AI's potential to "speed up the work that supports the Monetary Policy Committee's" decision-making processes. However, he clarified that AI serves as a tool and does not make the ultimate decisions for policymakers.
