AI Boom Reshapes Investment Strategies for Southeast Asian Venture Capital

The technology publication Tech in Asia reports that venture capital firms across Southeast Asia are experiencing an "AI fever," significantly altering their investment targets and strategies.

Several VC firms have indicated to Tech in Asia that the burgeoning interest in AI has prompted extensive discussions about adjusting their investment mandates. For some, this has meant redirecting capital towards AI development hubs like the US, potentially leaving Southeast Asian startups to navigate new fundraising landscapes within the region.

Analog Ventures, an early-stage VC firm, has shifted its focus from SaaS and fintech to AI-adjacent sectors such as energy and biotech. The firm observed AI's capacity to boost productivity and investor interest across various industries. Similarly, Manila-based Kickstart Ventures has pivoted towards AI companies since 2022, responding to limited partners' desires for technologies that can be scaled and benefit the local market.

Kickstart's recent AI investments, Lydia.AI (insurtech) and Featherless.AI (AI platform), are US-based but align with this regional strategy. While the AI boom presents new opportunities, some investors express caution, viewing the rapid shift as potentially short-sighted. The evolving AI landscape continues to be a critical area of focus for VCs in Southeast Asia.
