AI Captures 57% of Startup Funding in Q1 2026, Report Finds

A new report reveals AI startups secured 57% of all capital in Q1 2026, while debt financing emerged as a significant funding method. AI companies also advance faster to later funding stages.

Artificial intelligence startups dominated startup funding in the first quarter of 2026, capturing 57 percent of all disclosed capital, according to a new report by Fundraise Insider. Despite comprising 36.4 percent of funded companies, AI ventures attracted a disproportionately large share of investments, indicating their rapid ascent through funding rounds.

The report analyzed 1,729 companies that raised capital between January 1 and March 31, 2026, totaling $174.5 billion. The ten largest funding rounds, led by major players like Anthropic ($30 billion), xAI ($20 billion), and Waymo ($16 billion), accounted for over half (51.1 percent) of the total capital raised.

Debt financing also saw a significant surge, with 171 deals totaling $35.1 billion. This emerged as one of the most common ways companies raised funds, with notable concentration in sectors such as fintech, renewables, data centers, and real estate. California remained the leading state, attracting 28.9 percent of deals and 63.7 percent of capital.

The report highlights a bifurcation in the funding market, with a concentrated influx of capital into AI companies, particularly at later stages like Series B, where AI now represents nearly 60 percent of deals. This creates a higher barrier for non-AI companies seeking follow-on funding.

Chris Walker, founder of Fundraise Insider, noted that the market has split into two distinct economies. He emphasized that companies outside the top AI rounds still indicate a steady market, but the funding landscape increasingly favors AI-centric narratives. The data suggests that rapid execution post-funding is critical for startup success.
