AI CEOs Urge Cooperation at UN on Safety Risks

New York – The chief executives of artificial intelligence firms OpenAI and Anthropic, Sam Altman and Dario Amodei, urged the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday to foster international coordination in addressing the potential risks posed by AI.

"In our history, there have been times where countries who compete and don’t always like each other very much still come together for shared interests and the collective good in the face of a powerful new technology," said Sam Altman. "We believe this must be one of those times."

The calls for cooperation follow remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this month, who criticized what he termed a "globalist scheme" to control AI during his address to the UN General Assembly. Trump indicated that the U.S. would continue to encourage the technology's progress rather than restrict it.

Both Altman and Amodei have previously advocated for slowing the pace of AI development to better manage potential risks. Scrutiny of their companies' safety practices has intensified following warnings from industry researchers about the growing potential for AI models to cause catastrophic harm.

The diverging perspectives on AI regulation from the tech executives and the former U.S. president highlight the ongoing challenges in international policy and technological advancement.
