AI Companies Prepare for Catastrophe Scenarios and Backlash
OpenAI and Anthropic are reportedly preparing for public and political backlash following a potential AI catastrophe. Industry executives are examining worst-case scenarios and engaging with US lawmakers.

Artificial intelligence companies OpenAI and Anthropic are reportedly preparing for potential public and political backlash should a catastrophic AI incident disrupt critical infrastructure, financial services, or internet connectivity. According to an Axios report, executives are examining worst-case scenarios and planning to engage with U.S. lawmakers.
Industry insiders cited in the report suggest a major incident could occur within the next six to twelve months. OpenAI has stated that its preparedness exercises cover potential scenarios, not events it deems inevitable. Anthropic declined to comment on the matter.
The report indicates that such an incident could lead to sweeping restrictions and scrutiny for industry leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Former President Donald Trump could also face criticism for resisting stricter AI regulations, according to the report.
These preparations come as AI systems demonstrate increasing capabilities in executing code, exploiting software vulnerabilities, and coordinating autonomous agents, raising concerns about whether safeguards can keep pace with rapid development.
