AI Companies Spend Millions on Elections to Influence Legislation

Numerous AI companies and industry leaders are investing millions of dollars in the 2026 midterm elections. The stated goal is to influence Congress and shape future AI legislation.

As of the end of June, two major AI-focused political action committees (PACs) had deployed at least $44 million to support 40 candidates for the House and Senate. These groups have raised over $200 million for the remainder of the election cycle.

The AI industry's increasing investment positions it as a significant player in Washington's influence landscape. Companies aim to mold the first national legislation regulating AI use. Although legislation is unlikely to pass this year, both parties have indicated AI will remain a priority.

A majority of candidates backed by these PACs have won their primary elections thus far. Of the 28 candidates supported by "Leading the Future," 25 were successful, with only one loss. Similarly, candidates backed by "Public First Action" have also seen high success rates.

The playbook mirrors the cryptocurrency industry's approach in the 2024 elections, where the "Fairshake" PAC spent $200 million to support pro-crypto candidates, leading to significant legislation in the digital assets space.
