While economic growth is expected to allow about 25 million workers to remain in their current fields, the remaining 11 million may need to pursue entirely new careers.
This transition implies that around 770,000 workers might need to switch occupational groups annually, a rate 3.6 times higher than the historical average. Although the era of AI may ultimately generate more jobs than it eliminates, McKinsey forecasts it will require the largest and most sustained workforce transformation in U.S. history.
The impact of AI and automation is expected to vary across professions. Office and administrative support, agriculture, fishing, and forestry, as well as technology and analytics sectors, are identified as potentially facing the most significant effects. The report estimates that over 70% of all workers will require some level of reskilling, even if they remain in their current occupations.
