AI Cracks Paid Software, Sparking Debate on Software Protection

A Reddit user claims to have used a large language model to bypass the licensing restrictions of Internet Download Manager. The incident highlights AI's code analysis capabilities and raises concerns about software security.

A Reddit user has reportedly used a large language model (LLM) to bypass the licensing restrictions of Internet Download Manager (IDM), a popular paid download manager. The incident, shared online in late September, has ignited discussions about the potential of AI in software cracking and the evolving landscape of digital security.

The user, identified as No_Ideal8394, stated that they utilized an uncensored LLM, Qwen3.8-Flash-Next-Uncensored. By providing the AI with approximately 250,000 tokens of context and tasking it with analyzing the software's executable file, the user claims the AI produced a viable patch within 30 minutes. This modification allegedly removed the trial limitations, effectively activating the software without the standard $11.95 annual fee. The user reported spending only about 5 euros on cloud GPU rental for the process.

According to the user's account, the AI directly analyzed the executable code and identified the authorization validation routines. A single byte modification was reportedly sufficient to bypass the activation check. The user noted that while finding IDM keys was previously achievable, AI-assisted patching could significantly expedite the process in the future.

This event underscores a broader trend where advanced AI models are demonstrating capabilities in code analysis and manipulation. Previously, such tasks required significant human expertise in reverse engineering. However, experts caution that while AI can aid in understanding code, circumventing robust commercial software protection often involves more complex challenges. Many software vendors employ multi-layered security measures, including code obfuscation, integrity checks, and online or hardware-bound licensing, to prevent unauthorized use.
