AI Data Centers Drive Demand for Renewable Energy Solutions

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is ushering in a new era for the data center industry, characterized by high computational power and intensive resource utilization. This emerging "Type B" data center infrastructure presents distinct requirements compared to traditional "Type A" storage centers.

Servers essential for AI training, particularly those equipped with the latest NVIDIA GPUs, can consume between 700-1200W per chip. With multiple GPUs per server and multiple servers per rack, power densities may reach up to 36-50KW per rack by 2027. Unlike conventional data centers, AI workloads allow for flexible scheduling, with less emphasis on constant server uptime.

Data centers are among the most energy-intensive buildings, consuming 10 to 50 times more energy per square foot than typical office spaces. Globally, they account for 1-1.3% of total electricity consumption. This demand is set to grow as internet users and traffic continue to increase.

The industry faces the challenge of powering these high-demand infrastructures sustainably. Beyond traditional grid connections, options like direct links to nuclear power plants or the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) on data center campuses are being considered. These approaches, however, introduce complexities regarding site availability and extended construction timelines.

There is a growing need for rapidly deployable, modular, and distributed power generation systems. Renewable energy has emerged as a primary choice. Companies like EXP, SYSTRA Canada, and Egis are investigating strategies for integrating renewable energy, particularly into "Type B" data centers, to ensure a sustainable future.
