AI Data Centers to Consume 26.3 GW by FY32, Power Ministry Projects
India's Ministry of Power projects that AI data centers will demand 26.3 gigawatts (GW) of electricity by fiscal year 2031-32. The ministry aims to meet this increased load primarily through renewable energy sources.

India's Ministry of Power anticipates that Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centers will require 26.3 gigawatts (GW) of electricity by fiscal year 2031-32. The ministry stated that this additional load is planned to be primarily served by renewable energy capacity. Overall peak electricity demand in the country is expected to exceed 388 GW by March 2032.
Minister of State for Power, Shripad Naik, announced the projection in a written parliamentary reply. This figure nearly doubles the government's previous estimate from March of the same year, which projected data center electricity demand to reach 13.56 GW by FY32. The ministry is actively developing transmission infrastructure and increasing capacity, including renewables, to address this growing demand.
Discussions are underway between the ministry and industry stakeholders regarding the establishment of reliable power supply and grid balancing solutions to manage the fluctuating power demands of data centers. Consideration is also being given to locating data centers away from urban centers to mitigate potential transmission congestion.
Major Indian conglomerates, including Adani Group and Reliance, are announcing substantial investments in AI data center infrastructure. Global technology firms such as Google and Microsoft have also committed billions to build or expand their data center facilities within India.
Despite aggressive expansion plans, the data center industry faces challenges, including high energy consumption, limited access to reliable renewable energy, land acquisition hurdles, and increasing capital costs. The growing energy intensity of AI workloads raises concerns about India's grid readiness and the overall sustainability of its power infrastructure.
