AI Data Centers to Consume 26.3 GW Power by FY32, India Estimates

India's Ministry of Power estimates that data centers supporting artificial intelligence (AI) workloads will necessitate 26.3 gigawatts (GW) of power by the end of fiscal year 2031-32. The ministry intends to meet this escalated demand primarily through renewable energy sources.

Minister of State for Power, Shripad Naik, stated in a parliamentary reply that this projected 26.3 GW load from AI data centers will be integrated into the national grid. The overall peak electricity demand in the country is anticipated to surpass 388 GW by March 2032.

This latest projection nearly doubles the government's previous estimate from March of this year, which placed the data center electricity demand at 13.56 GW by FY32. The ministry is reportedly undertaking a phased expansion of transmission infrastructure and increasing energy capacity, including renewables, to address the burgeoning demand.

Simultaneously, major Indian conglomerates and technology firms are announcing substantial investments in AI data center infrastructure. Adani Group is partnering with Jabil Inc., while Reliance plans a significant investment in AI. HCLTech has also entered into a partnership to establish a large AI data center. Global tech giants like Google and Microsoft are also expanding their data center footprint in India.

Despite this rapid expansion, operators face challenges including high energy consumption, limited access to reliable renewable power, land acquisition issues, cooling requirements, and rising capital costs. The intensified energy demands of AI are raising concerns about the readiness and sustainability of India's power grid, with some local communities also voicing opposition to new data center projects due to environmental impact fears.
