AI defeats Stratego world champion

A team of researchers from Carnegie Mellon, MIT, New York University, and Stanford University has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) that has defeated the world's best Stratego player. The AI, named Ataraxos, beat Pim Niemeijer 15 games to one, with four draws.

Stratego is a classic board game where players' army placements and unit strengths are hidden from their opponent. Victory is achieved by capturing the opponent's flag. The game's nature relies on a substantial amount of hidden information, making it a challenge for AI development compared to games like chess or Go.

"There's something super distinctive about Stratego, which is that it is a massive amount of hidden information that unfolds over a very long time scale," said Eugene Vinitsky, a researcher at NYU and co-author of the study.

The AI's training required 16 GPUs and only a few thousand dollars, a significantly lower cost than previous large-scale AI projects. This achievement demonstrates AI's potential in games with imperfect information.
