AI Discovers Novel Drug Target for Pain Relief
Fast Company's AI platform identified a new biological target, leading to a drug candidate that outperformed morphine in preclinical pain studies.

SHANGHAI – Fast Company's AI program, PandaOmics, has identified a new biological target that led to the development of a novel pain medication. The company reports that the AI discovered a link to a previously unrecognized protein, against which the developed molecule, ISM9528, proved more effective than morphine in preclinical studies.
This discovery, originating from the company's laboratory research in Shanghai, suggests AI can not only accelerate drug development but also generate new scientific insights. Traditionally, identifying new drug targets has been costly and time-consuming, with unconventional biological ideas often deemed too risky for exploration.
According to Fast Company, its AI platform analyzed vast datasets to pinpoint a protein the company was already utilizing for different disease areas. In this context, the protein was linked to pain signaling mechanisms for the first time. A newly engineered molecule designed to interact with this protein achieved promising results in preclinical models for pain management.
The company intends to advance ISM9528 into clinical trials in 2027. The global pain management market is valued at nearly $100 billion, but traditional opioids and NSAIDs carry significant risks such as addiction and side effects. The new AI-driven approach aims to offer a safer and more effective alternative.
