AI Drives Transformation in Fashion E-commerce

The fashion e-commerce landscape in India is entering a new era, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the forefront. This current phase goes beyond initial intelligence for customer journeys, such as improved search or recommendations, and focuses on fundamentally reshaping marketplace operations.

E-commerce platforms like Myntra, Nykaa, and Meesho are investing heavily in AI to personalize the shopping experience for individual users. Myntra's CTO Pramod Adiddam emphasizes that the future lies in making every interaction conversational, rather than relying solely on chatbots. The company is leveraging AI for personalized search, dynamic homepages that adapt to each customer, AI-generated styling advice, and improved visualization tools for garment fit.

Myntra's Chief Product Officer Lakshminarayan Swaminathan describes this as a reimagining of the shopping journey, aiming to make traditional browsing and searching less necessary through enhanced personalization. Over 85% of Myntra users with sufficient shopping history already receive AI-powered size and fit recommendations. Nykaa is developing similar personalized storefronts and virtual closet features, while Meesho has launched Vaani, a GenAI shopping assistant that has quickly gained traction.

The impact of AI is also profound behind the scenes. Myntra has significantly reduced the time for seller onboarding and product listing, automated a large portion of customer support queries, and improved supply chain planning. The company has built internal AI platforms to enable cross-team development and accelerate business analytics. Nykaa and Meesho are also focusing on building shared AI infrastructure to support these advancements.

Future competition in e-commerce is expected to hinge not just on product assortment or logistics, but increasingly on infrastructure and proprietary data. The next phase for Indian fashion e-commerce will be characterized by the strategic use of AI to redesign underlying business processes, moving beyond AI for its own sake.
