AI era corporate reputation needs resilience beyond trust

The proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) presents new challenges to corporate reputation management, rendering traditional metrics like "trust" insufficient, according to a new report by Bully Pulpit International.

The second annual Reputation Resilience Index highlights two primary threats posed by AI: an increase in misinformation, making positive brand narratives harder to establish, and a growing suspicion that companies are using AI to displace workers and disadvantage consumers.

The research indicates a "verification gap," with 81% of consumers agreeing that AI makes it too easy to spread false rumors about companies, and only 15% feeling capable of detecting AI-generated content. Furthermore, 65% of U.S. adults believe companies use AI as an excuse to cut workforces and increase profits.

Companies relying solely on historical metrics like "trust" and favorability are at risk of being caught off guard, as these do not fully capture emerging threats. The report advocates for a shift from reactive communication to a proactive strategy driven by "people-first" principles.

To build resilience, executive leadership must demonstrate tangible commitment to the future beyond the bottom line. This involves prioritizing long-term principles over short-term profits, using technology to empower employees, and maintaining transparency. Companies must also show their commitment to national values through concrete actions and policies.
