AI firm Anthropic opens Singapore office, inks safety pact

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has established a new office in Singapore, marking its fifth presence in the Asia-Pacific region. The opening on October 14 was accompanied by the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Singapore's Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) concerning AI safety and responsible adoption.

The agreement outlines technical exchanges focused on AI model evaluation, testing standards, and incident response. It also includes provisions for research into AI adoption and its broader impacts. This collaboration aligns with Singapore's ongoing efforts to ensure AI's safe and responsible use, including its AI assurance initiatives.

Anthropic has previously participated in Singapore's generative AI evaluation sandbox, launched in October 2023 by the Infocomm Media Development Authority and the AI Verify Foundation. This sandbox aims to test AI systems for safety and reliability.

The company reported that its Claude AI is utilized in Singapore by entities such as GovTech, Grab, and DBS. Specifically, over 1,500 GovTech engineers and technical staff are using Claude Code for their work.
