Artificial intelligence is not the primary driver behind recent corporate layoffs, contrary to popular belief, argues Joe Procopio, founder of JoeProcopio.com, in an opinion piece for Inc. Magazine. Procopio contends that the role of AI in workforce reduction is overstated and that the technology should be viewed as an augmentation tool rather than a wholesale replacement for human workers.
The author criticizes the widespread assumption that AI is rapidly taking over jobs and leading to significant workforce cuts. He uses an analogy of a lawyer presenting an AI-generated argument in court that is later found to be inaccurate. In such a scenario, the responsibility falls on the lawyer and their client, not the AI itself, highlighting that accountability remains with the human user.
"I’m kind of sad that I still have to make the AI-is-a-tool-not-a-replacement argument in the back half of 2026," Procopio writes. He observes that many companies are erroneously pursuing AI supremacy and financial gains by aiming to replace all their workers with AI systems.

However, Procopio warns against such a simplistic approach, suggesting it could lead to unforeseen consequences, such as errors with regulatory bodies like the IRS.
