AI Master's Program Enrollment Grows Significantly Faster Than Other Graduate Programs

The market for master's degrees in artificial intelligence (AI) in the United States is experiencing robust growth, significantly outpacing other graduate education fields. A 2026 market outlook report from OnlineMastersColleges.com (OMC) indicates that enrollment in AI master's programs has expanded by approximately 35โ€“40% since 2019. This growth rate is estimated to be 10โ€“15 times faster than that of overall graduate enrollment.

Several factors are fueling this expansion. Key drivers include the rapid adoption of AI technologies by employers across various sectors, a growing demand for talent in machine learning, and continued investment by universities in developing and offering AI-focused graduate programs. The number of universities offering AI master's programs has approximately doubled in the past five years.

Graduates with AI master's degrees continue to command substantial salary premiums compared to technology professionals holding bachelor's degrees. The report highlights strong employer demand for roles such as machine learning engineers, AI researchers, NLP specialists, and advanced data scientists. Many AI master's programs can also offer a positive return on investment (ROI) within two to five years post-graduation.

Furthermore, accessibility to these programs has increased. The OMC analysis found that 97% of surveyed AI master's programs do not require GRE scores, and 82% accept applicants from backgrounds outside of computer science. The report assigns an overall grade of 'A' to the AI master's market, reflecting its strong outlook based on employer demand, salary potential, and enrollment momentum.
