AI Maturity Report: Media Houses Utilize AI, But Economic Benefits Remain Unclear

A report by BDZV and Retresco indicates that German media companies have strategically adopted AI, but identifying clear business cases and proving economic benefits remains challenging.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has established a strategic and operational foothold in German media companies, yet robust business cases remain scarce. This is according to the AI Maturity Report 2026, published by the Bundesverband Digitalpublisher und Zeitungsverleger (BDZV) and AI specialist Retresco.

The share of media houses with an AI strategy has increased to 79 percent. However, challenges in technical implementation, such as infrastructure and integration, have grown significantly. While efficiency gains, like faster processes and employee relief, have been observed, cost savings, user engagement, and revenue increases have not met expectations.

"We must shift the focus from mere AI adoption to its measurable impact," stated Johannes Sommer, CEO of Retresco. He emphasized that AI must demonstrate its contribution to user acquisition, retention, engagement, and measurable revenues in the future.

The report also reveals that while 92 percent expect faster processes and 80 percent have seen such effects, only 20 percent can measure actual cost savings. Expectations for new formats and revenue models are also high, but results lag behind. Furthermore, journalistic risks associated with AI use, such as potential threats to credibility through errors, have become a central concern.
