Moonshot AI, a Chinese artificial intelligence company, has demonstrated the capabilities of its Kimi K3 language model by having it design a dedicated chip for its own architecture. The model was also employed in the construction and optimization phases of the chip.

The company stated that the entire process, from building and optimizing to verifying the chip, was completed within a 48-hour timeframe. This development highlights the growing role of AI in chip design, an area described as highly significant within the semiconductor industry. For context, OpenAI previously utilized AI assistance to design a chip in nine months.

The custom-designed chip is intended for the nano model operating on Kimi K3's proprietary architecture. It integrates 1.46 million standard cells and 0.277MB of SRAM, occupying a die area of just 4 mm².

During simulations, the chip met timing requirements at a 100 MHz frequency, achieving a decoding throughput exceeding 8700 tokens per second. Moonshot AI suggests this demonstrates Kimi K3's potential as an intelligent agent capable of long-term planning and execution.
