AI-powered Skin Patch Diagnoses Health Conditions Instantly

Researchers at the University of Chicago have developed a novel skin patch capable of acting as an immediate personal doctor by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI). The findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Electronics.

Unlike conventional wearables, such as smartwatches, this flexible patch executes AI calculations internally in milliseconds, eliminating the need to transfer information over a wireless connection. This circumvents the delay inherent in sending data to external servers for analysis, which can be critical in life-saving scenarios.

The patch was manufactured using techniques that allow for the printing of organic electrochemical transistors onto flexible materials. This novel approach enables rapid, on-the-spot diagnosis without reliance on external data transfer, potentially improving patient safety and response times for critical health issues.

Sihong Wang, a co-senior author of the study, stated the aim is to make wearable and implantable devices smarter, offering individuals an integrated, instantaneous medical insight. This technology could significantly enhance the monitoring of chronic conditions and facilitate early intervention.
