AI Researchers Warn of Existential Threat from Superintelligence
AI researchers have released videos expressing concern over the dangers of superintelligence. One former OpenAI and Google DeepMind employee estimates the risk of human extinction as comparable to a 'coin flip'.

AI researchers have voiced significant concerns regarding the potential dangers posed by the development of superintelligence. Several experts, including former employees from leading AI labs like OpenAI and Google DeepMind, warn that advanced artificial intelligence could represent an existential threat to humanity.
Palisade Research, a non-profit organization focused on studying AI capabilities and motivations, has compiled and launched a series of interviews on the matter. Geoffrey Irving, a former researcher at both OpenAI and Google DeepMind, estimates the probability of human extinction to be around 50 percent, stating, 'superintelligence is exactly as dangerous as it sounds'.
These concerns are echoed by other prominent figures in the field. Neel Nanda, a research scientist at Google DeepMind, suggests there is 'at least a 10 percent chance that it causes human extinction'. The interviews feature insights from current and former personnel at major AI organizations including OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
The researchers' warnings highlight the critical need for careful consideration of ethical implications and safety protocols as AI technology continues to advance. Managing the potential risks associated with highly capable AI systems is deemed crucial for the future of humankind.
