AI Sector Sees Large Funding Rounds in Q2 2026

The artificial intelligence (AI) sector attracted $149.5 billion in equity funding in the second quarter of 2026, a decrease from the previous quarter. However, large funding rounds exceeding $100 million played a significant role, comprising nearly 89% of all capital invested in AI, despite making up only 6% of all AI deals.

Notable funding rounds included Anthropic, which secured three of the quarter's five largest deals. Other substantial rounds went to Project Prometheus and DeepSeek. Analysts suggest this indicates that while overall funding has cooled, the largest investments are increasingly concentrated within a select group of major AI companies.

Exits within the sector, including mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and initial public offerings (IPOs), saw a decline in Q2. While AI remained the leading sector for exits, M&A volume fell by 10% and IPOs by 6%. Companies involved in the largest exits had aggressively grown their headcount beforehand, such as SpaceX and AI chipmaker Cerebras.

In Q2 2026, 37 new AI unicorns (companies valued at over $1 billion) were created, marking the strongest performance since the second quarter of 2022. The US led in the number of new unicorns, but Asia significantly increased its share. DeepSeek emerged as Asia's largest new unicorn with a valuation of $59.2 billion. This growth reflects a global trend where investments in AI infrastructure and companies focusing on physical solutions are commanding substantial valuations.
