AI Sends Users Away From Web Pages, Challenging Publisher Business Models
AI summaries in search results significantly reduce clicks to traditional web pages, while AI systems themselves consume more web content. This shift impacts publishers' ad-based revenue and reshapes online advertising.

The way users interact with search results is changing, with artificial intelligence summaries increasingly diverting traffic away from traditional web pages. Research from Pew indicates that when an AI summary is present, users click on traditional search results only 8% of the time, compared to 15% without a summary. Citations within AI answers see even lower engagement, with click-through rates around 1%.
This trend has severely impacted online publishers, particularly those reliant on ad revenue from page views. Chartbeat data showed a 34% decline in Google Search page views across its network in 2025. Business Insider, for example, experienced a 55% drop in organic search traffic over three years, leading to closures for some smaller publications. Conversely, AI systems are consuming web content at an accelerating rate to generate these summaries.
According to a Similarweb report, the proportion of ChatGPT answers citing live web pages grew over fivefold in less than a year, reaching 6.8%. This highlights a critical dependency: the quality of AI answers relies on the underlying web content. As AI visibility increases, organic search visibility becomes even more crucial for content discovery.
Recent developments show a shift in AI-driven traffic. After an update to ChatGPT that surfaced more clickable brand links, referral traffic surged. However, a larger share of this traffic now lands on homepages rather than deep-linked articles, suggesting a change in user intent. AI-recommended brands are also seeing significantly higher follow-up visits.
This evolving landscape presents a direct challenge to traditional search advertising models. Google, while a major player in AI, faces declining market share while simultaneously cannibalizing its own click-based revenue. New advertising formats, such as sponsored placements within conversational AI, are emerging, creating a new competitive battleground for online advertising revenue and impacting the long-term viability of the open web.
