AI Shaping Australia's Electric Vehicle Industry

Australia's electric vehicle (EV) sector saw significant growth in 2024, with sales of battery and plug-in hybrid vehicles totaling approximately 114,000 units. By the first half of 2025, EVs represented over 12% of new vehicle registrations.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming integral to the EV industry, aiding in predictive maintenance, streamlining charging operations, and analyzing driver behavior for improved energy efficiency. This technological integration supports cost-effective and greener transportation.

In March 2025, the Australian government announced a AUD 2.4 million initiative through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to expand EV charging infrastructure. EVX Australia is set to install 250 kerbside chargers and 500 charging plugs across New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia.

The Australian EV market was valued at USD 16.2 billion in 2024, according to IMARC Group. The market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 30.0% from 2025 to 2033, reaching USD 171.6 billion. Growth drivers include technological advancements in batteries, automaker commitments to EV models, and the expansion of charging infrastructure.
