AI Shifts Engineering Focus to Design and Testing
AI coding tools are accelerating code generation, prompting engineers to dedicate more time to system design, output review, and reliability testing. This shift also redefines productivity metrics.

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into software development is significantly reshaping the role of engineers, shifting attention from pure code generation to system design, output review, and testing for reliability.
At Inc42's The CTO Summit 2026, industry leaders discussed how AI is changing engineering workflows. Panellists highlighted that while AI speeds up coding, it necessitates more engineer time spent on design and review. This transition is prompting a re-evaluation of productivity metrics, as increased code output does not automatically equate to better products or faster release cycles.
Executives noted that AI can quickly inflate traditional metrics like pull requests or lines of code without necessarily improving team performance. Instead, they emphasized that speed to production, system stability, availability, and customer impact are more accurate indicators of engineering success.
The importance of testing has grown substantially. One company reported that its spending on virtual testing environments now exceeds its investment in AI tools. With a high percentage of test cases automated, testing teams can focus on more complex performance and security validation. The consensus was that AI cannot compensate for foundational weaknesses in engineering, such as inadequate systems for performance monitoring and issue detection.
Companies are also adjusting their approach to AI tool access. Moving from fixed budgets to automatic top-ups has improved tool utilization. Adoption has also expanded beyond product and engineering teams, indicating broader organizational use of AI capabilities.
