AI Survey Finds Limited Impact on US Jobs So Far
A new survey of US workers indicates that artificial intelligence has not significantly reduced or increased jobs in the four years since ChatGPT's release. Only a small percentage reported AI-related job changes.
Artificial intelligence tools have not yet led to substantial job losses or gains for US workers, according to a survey commissioned by sociologist Jeffrey C. Dixon. The online poll, conducted by YouGov in July-August 2026 with 1,250 U.S. workers, suggests that contrary to some predictions, AI's impact on employment has been limited so far.
Key findings reveal that only about 3% of surveyed workers reported losing a job due to AI since 2023. Conversely, approximately 6% indicated they secured a new job that didn't exist before AI, and about 9% reported receiving a promotion or advancement related to AI skills.
These results contrast with widespread speculation about AI's potential to displace or create large numbers of jobs. While concerns about AI-driven unemployment persist, the survey data suggests a more nuanced and less dramatic effect on the U.S. labor market at this time.
The study highlights that AI-related job changes remain uncommon, with the most significant perceived impact being opportunities for promotion and career advancement for some workers. Dixon notes that accurately attributing job changes to AI can be challenging and that future advancements in AI could alter these trends.
