The AI toy sector in China is experiencing rapid growth, yet investment in the industry is cooling. This trend is accompanied by increasing product homogenization and high return rates.

Market forecasts predict the Chinese AI toy market to reach 29 billion yuan in 2025 and 34.2 billion yuan by 2026. Despite robust sales figures, investor interest has reportedly waned. E-commerce platform Taobao, for instance, has recorded an over 1600% year-on-year increase in AI toy transaction volume.

Consumer purchasing behavior varies geographically. In major cities, AI toys are often bought for their educational value or as a technological novelty, justifying higher price points. In smaller markets, affordability and the toy's ability to engage children in conversation are primary decision factors.

Gifting has emerged as a key driver for AI toy sales, with many manufacturers exceeding their previous full-year sales within the first half of the current year. The rapid growth and potential profits have attracted numerous brands focused on quick returns, often at the expense of long-term product quality and user experience. This is reflected in a high return rate, reportedly exceeding 50% in some cases.

Online retailers are attempting to mitigate returns by implementing conditional return policies, such as requiring product activation. However, this can also lead to decreased sales. The industry is seeking a balance between innovation, cost management, and consumer demand, with the development of a sustainable business model being critical.
