Hospitals in the United States have spent an extra $942 million over two years due to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in submitting insurance claims, an analysis by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) has found. The BCBSA, one of the largest health insurance providers in the U.S., reported a significant surge in the number of patients documented with complex conditions, with no evidence indicating a corresponding increase in the actual treatment provided.
The New York Times highlighted the BCBSA analysis, suggesting that AI's growing role in healthcare may be driving up costs. While disputes between hospitals and insurers over billing and treatment coverage are not new, the adoption of AI by both parties appears to be exacerbating these conflicts.
Dr. Shiv Rao, founder of AI startup Abridge, acknowledged the potential for AI to lead to negative outcomes, describing a "dystopian scenario" if not managed properly. However, he also noted AI's potential to de-escalate conflicts and reduce overall costs.
Luke Chalker, senior vice president at BCBSA, characterized the situation as a "one-sided, brutal fight" disadvantaging insurance companies, rather than a balanced negotiation.
