AI Use May Blunt Student Understanding, Study Finds

Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, have found that the use of AI tools, such as ChatGPT, may lead to diminished long-term learning for students. The study, conducted in partnership with McGraw Hill, analyzed over a decade of usage data from the Aleks adaptive math platform.

The research compared student work methods and performance before and after the introduction of ChatGPT. Data was collected from millions of problem-solving sessions completed by students from fifth grade through college between 2015 and 2025, with ChatGPT's launch in late 2022 serving as a natural breakpoint in the dataset.

Researchers specifically examined how AI usage impacted students' ability to solve word problems compared to more visual and interactive tasks that were harder to directly input into AI tools.

The findings suggest that while AI can expedite problem-solving in the moment, it may concurrently undermine deeper understanding and critical thinking skills. However, a separate study from Middlebury College in July indicates that AI can be productively employed as a tutor, provided students maintain their critical thinking abilities.
