AI won't replace radiologists but will significantly change their jobs

Predictions that artificial intelligence would replace radiologists have not materialized, but the field is undergoing significant transformation. While the number of practicing radiologists is expected to grow, AI tools are increasingly becoming integrated into their workflows.
These AI systems are enhancing efficiency by automating report generation and prioritizing urgent cases. Furthermore, some AI tools possess the capability to detect abnormalities missed by the human eye and interpret medical images with accuracy comparable to or exceeding that of trained radiologists.
For instance, AI-assisted colonoscopies have demonstrated a higher polyp detection rate compared to conventional methods, highlighting AI's potential to improve diagnostic outcomes. This technology is rapidly becoming a key component in medical diagnostics.
Of the approximately 1,400 AI-enabled medical devices cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), about 75% are intended for radiology. This concentration makes radiology a focal point for AI adoption in healthcare and serves as an indicator for the broader integration of expert decision-making systems across the medical field.
