AI Workers Skeptical of Existential Threats

Multiple individuals working on artificial intelligence (AI) at large companies are skeptical of claims that unchecked AI development could lead to humanity's demise. Employees speaking anonymously to the BBC from firms including OpenAI, Meta, and DeepMind characterized recent high-profile warnings as "laughable" and "not real."

These fears have existed for decades, but according to the anonymous sources, the new claims often lack detail and are based on "major jumps in reasoning or hypothetical circumstances." A former OpenAI employee who knew one of the recent vocal proponents expressed amusement at the renewed discussion of existential threats, noting that the details on how an AI could pose such a danger are often vague. Rishub Jain, formerly of DeepMind and now founder of AI safety firm Sampura Research, also described the prevailing sentiment within AI companies regarding the new fears as "definitely been a little jokey."

Despite the lighthearted reaction to existential threats, there is agreement among AI workers and researchers regarding more immediate and tangible risks posed by the technology. These include potential vulnerabilities that could be exploited to bypass safety measures, as well as ethical concerns surrounding the increasing use of AI in military applications. The conversation among experts is described as more nuanced, with a broad consensus that various risks need to be considered and mitigated.
