Ailangantunturi Pumped Storage Project Advances in Permitting Process

Kemijoki Oy has submitted supplementary information to its water permit application for the Ailangantunturi pumped-storage power plant project, filed in May with the relevant Finnish authorities.

The application addendums include more detailed technical plans, arrangements for construction, such as dam and dredging works, as well as information on affected parties and compensation within the project's influence area. More detailed plans for environmental and water quality monitoring have also been included.

"The permitting process has progressed as planned. At this stage, the supplementary information provides greater clarity on managing construction-related impacts and risks, while ensuring authorities have access to the most comprehensive information possible when assessing the project's effects," stated Petri Vihavainen, Project Director at Kemijoki Oy.

The Ailangantunturi pumped storage power plant, planned for Kemijärvi, is among Finland's largest energy storage initiatives. If realized, the facility is expected to enhance electricity system flexibility, support renewable energy integration, and improve security of supply. The European Commission has designated the project a Project of Common Interest (PCI) due to its significance for Europe's energy security, self-sufficiency, and clean transition goals.
