Air Traffic Control System Deployed in German Airport's Sovereign Cloud
Memmingen Airport has commissioned the PHOENIX WebInnovation air traffic control system, operated in the SysEleven cloud. This marks the first deployment of a sovereign cloud solution for air traffic control in a German commercial airport tower.
Memmingen Airport officially commissioned the PHOENIX WebInnovation air traffic control system on May 13, 2024. The system is operated within the SysEleven cloud infrastructure and was brought into service by DFS Aviation Services (DAS).
This deployment represents the first time a sovereign cloud solution has been utilized for air traffic control within the tower at a German commercial airport. The system replaces traditional paper-based flight progress strips with a modern, electronic solution. SysEleven's MetaKube infrastructure, a Kubernetes and cloud platform, underpins DAS's SaaS offering, enabling location-independent access to air traffic reports and electronic flight progress strips.
SysEleven, a subsidiary of secunet, highlights that its sovereign cloud infrastructure simplifies IT operations and supports centralized maintenance. Both companies view this project as a model for public sector and critical infrastructure initiatives where high availability, data security, and digital sovereignty are paramount.
DFS Aviation Services considers this implementation a significant step in modernizing air traffic control. The company intends to leverage PHOENIX WebInnovation to meet stringent safety standards and operational demands using cloud-native principles, anticipating improved efficiency and user experience from the transition to a digital system.
