Airbnb CEO: AI agents need their own operating system
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky believes AI agents require their own operating system, moving beyond traditional interfaces. He discusses AI's role in the travel sector.

Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky has articulated a strong vision that AI agents necessitate their own dedicated operating system for optimal functionality.
In an interview with TechCrunch, Chesky emphasized that current conversational AI interfaces, such as chatbots, are insufficient for effective e-commerce or browsing. He explained that these interfaces often provide limited options and require multiple exchanges to achieve a user's goal.
Airbnb recently introduced an AI-powered search feature as part of its fall update. However, Chesky indicated that this is not the final iteration, and the interface will evolve. He believes the integration of AI in the travel industry demands novel approaches.
"I've long believed that a chatbot isn't the right interface for e-commerce," Chesky stated. "They give you a few options at a time, and you have to take multiple turns before reaching a result."
Chesky's perspective extends beyond mere search enhancements. He foresees a need for an AI-native operating system capable of managing and orchestrating AI agents more effectively, ultimately delivering a more seamless user experience.
