Airbnb CEO Prefers Texting Over Email for Communication

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky has stated he is moving away from email as a primary communication tool within the company. Chesky considers email to be inferior to most other communication methods, including texting, which he prefers for its speed and personal connection.

"I just find it inferior to almost every other form of communication," Chesky told Time magazine. He elaborated that text messages are organized around people, unlike email's subject-based structure, making it quicker and more personal. "You feel a deeper connection to the person," he said, adding that responding to texts "doesn't feel like work."

Chesky also noted that notifications from text messages often lead to faster responses. While he attempts to avoid texting staff when they are with their families, he acknowledged that the line between his work and personal life is more blended than for the average person. He also indicated that Zoom calls are preferable to texts, and in-person meetings are the most effective.

Skepticism regarding email's efficiency is not isolated. Francis Hellyer, founder and CEO of ticketing platform Tickadoo, previously told Fast Company that email can slow down communication, with messaging apps fostering real-time connection and faster decision-making.
